The short answer
Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO) has one of the most clearly documented, and least generous, solar export rates we cover. Its current tariff charges you 11.24 cents per kWh for power it delivers, but pays only 5.685 cents per kWh, about half, for power your system sends back.
At about 12.8 cents per kWh, a $300 monthly bill needs roughly 14 to 18 kW of solar to cover most of your use, and a $400 bill needs roughly 19 to 24 kW. PRECO serves parts of Manatee, Polk, DeSoto and Hardee counties.
How PRECO's rate works
- Solar customers use Rate RS-DGE, Residential Service - Renewable Distributed Generation Energy, in place of PRECO's standard residential rate.
- You pay a Facilities Use Charge of $33 a month, instead of the standard customer charge.
- Delivered Energy, power PRECO supplies to you, is billed at 11.24 cents per kWh.
- Received Energy, power your system sends to PRECO, is paid at 5.685 cents per kWh.
- Both rates adjust with PRECO's Cost of Power Adjustment Clause.
- The minimum term of service is 12 months, and RGS size is capped at 1,000 kW per installation.
A 1,000 kWh month on Rate RS-DGE
Received Energy is paid at roughly half the Delivered Energy rate, so power you use at home is worth about twice what power you export earns.
The time-of-use option
PRECO also offers Rate RS-DGTOU for solar customers who want time-of-use pricing:
| Period | Delivered (you pay) | Received (you're paid) |
|---|---|---|
| On-Peak | 23.000 cents per kWh | 9.000 cents per kWh |
| Off-Peak | 9.000 cents per kWh | 5.685 cents per kWh |
| Super Off-Peak | 7.000 cents per kWh | 5.685 cents per kWh |
On-peak is 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. from April through October, and 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. from November through March. The same $33 Facilities Use Charge applies. A system that produces most of its output outside on-peak hours would generally do better on the standard RS-DGE rate.
What a monthly PRECO bill needs
The sizes below use 12.8 cents per kWh and cover roughly 75 to 95 percent of a year's use. Savings start from the PSC's December 2025 figures for PRECO's standard residential rate. The bill left over uses its solar rate: a $33 Facilities Use Charge plus 11.24 cents for each kWh PRECO delivers.
| Monthly bill | System size | Savings a year if you use it all at home | Bill left each month |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 a month | 9.1 to 11.6 kW | $1,450 to $1,890 | $42 to $79 |
| $300 a month | 14.0 to 17.7 kW | $2,360 to $3,030 | $47 to $104 |
| $400 a month | 18.8 to 23.8 kW | $3,260 to $4,180 | $52 to $128 |
| $500 a month | 23.6 to 29.9 kW | $4,170 to $5,320 | $57 to $152 |
Planning figures, not a quote, before taxes and local fees. The table assumes you use every solar kWh at home. PRECO pays 5.685 cents for each kWh your system sends back, so every 1,000 kWh exported instead of used is worth about $56 less.
How to connect solar to PRECO
- Choose a licensed contractor and confirm your system meets Florida Public Service Commission Rule 25-6.065.
- Execute PRECO's Renewable Generation System (RGS) Interconnection Agreement.

Common questions
How much solar do I need with Peace River Electric Cooperative?
At about 12.8 cents per kWh, a $300 monthly bill needs roughly 14 to 18 kW of solar and a $400 bill needs roughly 19 to 24 kW.
Is solar worth it with Peace River Electric Cooperative?
It depends on how much of your solar power you use at home. PRECO pays about half its delivered rate for power you export, so power you use yourself is worth roughly twice as much as power you send to the grid. Compare our estimate, which is a top end at PRECO, with each quote. The federal tax credit ended on December 31, 2025.
What does PRECO pay for solar power sent to the grid?
Under its current tariff (Rate RS-DGE, effective April 2022), PRECO charges you 11.24 cents per kWh for power it delivers to you, and pays you 5.685 cents per kWh, the Received Energy Rate, for power your system sends back.
What is PRECO's Facilities Use Charge for solar customers?
Solar members pay a separate $33 per month Facilities Use Charge instead of PRECO's standard customer charge. It is one of the required minimum charges, along with a Fixed Charge Rate set per your interconnection agreement.
Does PRECO offer a time-of-use rate for solar?
Yes, Rate RS-DGTOU. On-peak delivered energy is 23 cents per kWh and off-peak is 9 cents, while received (exported) energy is 9 cents on-peak and 5.685 cents off-peak. On-peak is 2 to 6 p.m. in summer (April to October) and 6 to 9 a.m. in winter (November to March).
How big a solar system can I install with PRECO?
Its residential rate covers systems up to 1,000 kW (1 MW) per installation, well above what a typical home needs.
How do I connect solar to Peace River Electric Cooperative?
You need PRECO's executed Renewable Generation System (RGS) Interconnection Agreement, and your system must meet the eligibility rules in Florida Public Service Commission Rule 25-6.065. Contact PRECO directly for its current application forms.
What happens to my PRECO solar service term?
The minimum term of service is twelve months, and it continues until you tell PRECO to disconnect or end your RGS Interconnection Agreement.
Which utility do I have if I live near Peace River Electric Cooperative?
Your bill names your utility. PRECO serves parts of Manatee, Polk, DeSoto, Hardee and surrounding counties, and some nearby addresses are on Duke Energy Florida or another utility, so check your bill or compare every utility we cover at solar by utility.
